Set of 3 Piet Zwart 'Koksmaat' hayboxes

Zwart, Piet, Other, Netherlands, 1930s

A set of three painted plywood hayboxes, designed by Piet Zwart for Bruynzeel, the Netherlands, circa 1938.

Hayboxes were used to complete the cooking process after the food was first heated on a stove. The hay or straw would insulate the heat and thus one would save fuel. The boxes are branded with 'Bruynzeel koksmaat' and in a good vintage condition and very suitable as a kitchen storage box. Documentation present.
