Song dynasty porcelain bowl

Ceramics, China, Song dynasty (960-1279 CE)

Song dynasty delicate chrysanthemum flower shaped dish with gently rounded sides covered overall in white glaze stopping short of the foot. The best pieces of this kind are very thin-walled and light as a feather – like this small dish. The precedent for this floral form is found in earlier metalwork and lacquer and it has been suggested that the imitation of silver was the primary force behind the production of white glazed objects.
