Mogensen, Jørgen

(1927 - 2004)

Jørgen Mogensen (1927–2004) was a Danish ceramic artist and sculptor renowned for his work at Royal Copenhagen and his independent studio. He trained at the Arts and Craftsman School in Copenhagen and later studied in Paris. Beginning his career at Royal Copenhagen in 1949, he collaborated with notable designers like Axel Salto and Gerd Bogelund.

His early works included semi-abstract motifs, particularly birds, on stoneware with warm matte glazes. Influenced by a Mexican art exhibition, Mogensen developed a distinctive style that combined Nordic and "primitive" aesthetics. In 1965, he and his wife Ursula Printz Mogensen established their own studio, focusing on bold, sculptural pottery and monumental works. Production at the studio ceased in the late 1980s.
