Esherick, Wharton

(1887 - 1970)

Wharton Esherick (1887-1970) was an American sculptor and an important member of the Studio Craft movement as a furniture maker. He grew up in Philadelphia, where he studied drawing, painting and printmaking. In 1912, he moved to the town of Malvern, where he would later build his studio

In the early 1920s, he began sculpting in wood and crafting furniture, in a style that evolved from Arts and Crafts to the curvilinear free-forms his work became famous for. His work is represented in the permanent collections of more than 20 major museums and galleries in the USA.
