A set of two painted plywood hay boxes, designed by Piet Zwart for Bruynzeel, the Netherlands in the 1930s. The measurements stated are of the larger box. The other one is 31 cm (12") high. Hay boxes were used to complete the cooking process after the food was first heated on a stove. The hay or straw would insulate the heat and thus one would save fuel. The boxes are branded with 'Bruynzeel koksmaat' and in a good vintage condition and very suitable as a kitchen storage box.
