An early and one-of-a-kind Willem Hendrik Gispen wrought iron pendant lamp with a glass shade and silk fringes underneath.

This is a design from the period before Gispen became widely known for his Bauhaus style Modernist designs. Gispen started out as an art smithy of decorative wrought iron fences, ornaments and fireplace guards in Rotterdam. This design still shows strong influences from the Amsterdam School and the Arts & Crafts movement. At this time (around 1916) he worked at the Kunstsmederij Rotterdam, where he started and which he took over and renamed to Kunstsmederij W. H. Gispen & Co.
