Rado, Ladislav

(1909 - 1993)

Ladislav Leland Rado was a Slovak-American architect and designer. He was born in Slovakia (then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire) and he studied architecture in Prague. He graduated in 1934 and was hired by an architectural studio in Brno. The architect Walter Gropius met Rado when visiting Brno and invited him to study at Harvard, where Gropius was the chairman of the architecture department. In 1945 Rado and Czech-born architect Antonin Raymond opened an architectural firm in New York. Some of the buildings they designed are the American Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia, 2 Hammarskjold Plaza in Manhattan and the Federal Office Building in Albany.
