Hagenauer, Karl

(1898 - 1956)

Karl Hagenauer (1898 - 1956) was an Austrian metalworker and designer. He studied architecture at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna, under Josef Hofmann and Karl Strnad. His teacher Hofmann recognized his talent and let him execute some objects for the Wiener Werkstätte. In 1919 he joined the Werkstätte Hagenauer Wien, the company that was founded by his father Carl in 1989. When his father died in 1928, Karl and his brother Franz and sister Grete took over the workshop, with Karl as the director and main designer. He designed a wide array of objects, like small sculptures, candlesticks, mirrors and lamps.
